Roberts & Belk Commemorative Silver Cloche c.1900

Silver plated and commemorative. Rare piece acknowledging one of the founding silversmiths - William Briggs. Used to protect food before serving. Formal dinnerware.

The company was initially based in Sheffield starting in 1810 and manufactured silver and EPNS hollware flatware and cutlery. Their trade mark being the ‘Roman Lamp’. One of the founders was William Briggs (1823 to 1845). In 1901 the company became Roberts & Belk. To commemorate the new company this cloche was inscripted with the initials "WB". This cloche is a tribute to William Briggs (WB) who was one of the founding silversmiths.

When William Briggs, a silver plater, died in 1878, the local press described a colourful life, which began as a young man in the militia. He had served under the Duke of Wellington at Waterloo and received a musket ball through his hat.

This cloche is in amazing antique condition dated c.1900.
